politics @lemmy.world•Trump Thinks He Can Magically Control the Price of Oil
0·1 day agoHe can control it, it’s just that control comes from publicly lying and it’s short lived.
He doesn’t mind that, he and his shitty friends buy the dip and then short sell for billions

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•People who have been on Lemmy since the very initial reddit API debacle, or before even that, how much do you think it has changed?
0·1 day agoI mean, in my headcannon this feels true, but it’s probably only because of a few loud users in comment threads I’ve come across; I can’t really speak for the instance as a whole and it’s probably not the case.
feddit.org on the other hand…

No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•How would you actually tax the ultra wealthy?
0·2 days agoNo, but if you own $4billion in stocks and you borrow against it to live off of then you’ve realized that value and you get taxed heavily on it.
The idea is to get them to stop doing the “unlimited money glitch” of doing this.

Technology@lemmy.world•AV1’s open, royalty-free promise in question as Dolby sues Snapchat over codecEnglish
3·2 days agoTrademarks I think are the most commonplace for this to happen, but I believe it applies to all IP. I don’t believe that any laws are written with specific timeframes but if the court feels that a right holder knew about and didn’t take action against an infringer within a “reasonable” time (as to be determined by the count based on the circumstances surrounding the case), then an implicit license is inferred.
If this was not done, it would encourage right holders to wait out infringement in order to achieve larger settlements.

Technology@lemmy.world•AV1’s open, royalty-free promise in question as Dolby sues Snapchat over codecEnglish
9·2 days agoOh, I’m not saying this to defend Dolby’s actions, IMHO and IANAL but this feels like a “see if this shit sticks” type of deal.
Maybe this is something specific that Snapchat’s implementation does and isn’t directly related to AV1 and the headline is clickbait? Hard for me to know.
I just wanted to point out that AV1’s consortium doesn’t seem to be rugpulling as some other commenters on here seem to feel.

0·2 days agoRude but true. But a lot of us are waking up from the fever dream we were fed. “We are the good guys! We are the best at everything because we work hard! That’s why we’re the richest, because we are the goodest and the most protecc”
And then you grow up and you learn we built an empire on slavery and exploitation, ourselves even being exploited, so that some dumbass greedy fucker can live in a gold and marble palace and fuck stolen children and throw their bastard newborns into Lake Michigan
It’s not a real country it’s all a pyramid scheme. We wouldn’t wake up until they went too far. It was always rotten underneath they just had enough wool over our eyes

You know what hardware is going to become common with developers? Dumb terminal tablets and cloud accounts, unless we stop the capitalists right away.

If this is such a universal human experience that we wrote it into movies made for general audiences, I think that programmers are not the only ones debugging to their ducks

Technology@lemmy.world•AV1’s open, royalty-free promise in question as Dolby sues Snapchat over codecEnglish
204·3 days agoSo just to be clear for all of you:
Dolby is not a creator of AV1, Dolby is not in charge of licensing decisions for AV1. All companies involved in HVEC and AV1 have not performed bait and switch.
What has happened is that Dolby alleges that they already have a patent on parts of what makes AV1 work. This may be an accident, or maybe someone stole Dolby’s tech. This may be something that can be fixed by changing how the software works, without breaking the file format.
It will be interesting to see how this one plays out.
Also, I’ve been saying it for 30 years at this point, and I will keep saying it: FUCK patents, software patents especially, and fuck the stupid system of capitalism for making them necessary

Lots of cool classic synth emulators here - true emulators, you need to ahem dump the firmware files from your legally owned gear.
Relevant to programming because they are emulating the DSP chips and they apparently figured them out via de-lidding techniques etc

Turns out it was copyright infringement! Who knew? /s
