Moss or wood people is a general category of elf or gnome like creatures from many parts of Germany. They have been reported as early as the 6th century by the writer Jordanes, as well as the priest Buchard of Worms. Moss could be helpful to people working in the woods and even act as household spirits if given offerings.
I love that there is a city called Worms
If you like that, then just wait till you hear about the greatest Danish, early modern antiquarian, Ole Worm. He made a, by the standards of the time, very scientific cabinets of curiosities, the first of its kind in Denmark, and correctly identified the origin of unicorn horns (narwhales)

He also penned a cover letter that ordered all bishops in Denmark to report on local folklore, and compiled their accounts into a big book. So he’ll probably be featured in a post one day.
What a clever worm!
