In what world is it OK to text a teacher? Like how does this person even know their teacher’s phone number? This conversation is exactly what parent teacher conferences are for.

Political Memes@lemmy.world•You just crossed over into ... THE DEAD ZONEEnglish
0·15 hours agoNothing about our culture or tendencies in the last hundred years has changed as much as 21st century humans really like to believe that it has. Just as a for instance, the first cosplay convention was also in the 30s.

Unpopular Opinion@lemmy.world•The Lemmy userbase isn't much better than that of Reddit.English
0·2 days agoYou are just saying what I said, that OP should’ve expected a flame war based on what they said. I never said that they shouldn’t have made the post. It feels like you’re ignoring what happened over the last 40 years in order to keep looking at the halcyon days of the Internet with nostalgia goggles.
I think people forget that the United States has no official demonym, and that America, like Great Britain, is a place not a country.
Personally, I’m a fan of adopting Station, since we all seem to have decided that the United States is a nation and not a federal system.
As an aside and fun fact: my favorite demonym is Solarian, which encompasses all people from the Solar System. The Solar System, sometimes confusingly, is named like the Moon where all moons are moons, but ours is the Moon. (Solarian is sometimes confused with Terran, but that is specific to the Earth-Moon system. All Terrans are Solarian, but not all Solarians are Terran.)

Mildly Interesting@lemmy.world•Three planes over my garden this afternoonEnglish
0·2 days agoThe worst is that lately it keeps turning notifications back on. So I’ll go a year without hearing anything from Nextdoor, an account I haven’t logged-in to since before the pandemic, and then all of a sudden out of fucking nowhere I’m getting a dozen emails about gunshots and all this other stuff miles away on like the 3rd of July or December 30th… when it’s definitely not gunshots.

0·2 days agoI grew up with lesbian parents in the south in the 90s. Checking the political climate is all I have ever done my entire life, internet or not. I don’t agree that there has ever been a time when that wasn’t a requirement online or offline.
Like for real? Obama’s tan suit happened 12 years ago and you think the Internet has only been politicized for 8? You must have managed to avoid pretty much all social media before Facebook, which is weird because Eternal September happened in the 90s and came from Usenet which has been political since the 80s.

0·2 days agoYou asked if people should be forced to live a certain way and were surprised that you got a vitriolic response??? In this political climate??? Maybe know your audience a little better.

0·4 days agoThe draft wasn’t ditched. The selective service has been active for decades, it isn’t supposed to be left active unless somebody is going to use the draft.

0·4 days agoThis mission has clothed and fed 1000s of people already. NASA is one of the USA’s largest jobs programs and most of us are completely okay with our tax dollars being used in that manner.
I thought you could see an ear if you zoomed in but now I am questioning that and also want to know what the story is.

0·6 days agoSpaceX’s only current launch capability is to LEO and it took them 20 years to make it ‘sustainable’. This rocket is going to the moon today.

That’s beyond strange to me. The only time I’ve ever used my personal phone for work purposes was the one job I had where they paid for it.
